Summary: Nine Million Teens and Young Adults

Alan Guttmacher Institute found that
approximately 750,000 teen pregnancies every year, 82%, are
unintended and more than one-quarter end in abortion. Additionally,
about nine million new sexually transmitted infections occur among
teens and young adults each year. By their 18th birthday, six in 10
teenage girls and more than five in 10 teenage boys have had sexual
intercourse. Finally, one-quarter of sexually experienced teens had
not received instruction about abstinence before the first time they
had sex.1
